Now that the colder weather is here and Winter is really starting to set it, your pond may need a little extra attention. You should be regularly checking on your filtration and aeration systems to ensure optimal operating anyway, but it is particularly important to do this at the start of Winter as this is the season where all the issues you might have across the coming year start to lay their roots. At the least you’re going to want to clean out your filter media and flush your pump but if you’ve had your system for a while now, or you’ve noticed any damage, you may want to apply a rebuilt kit to your compressor if you have one, or replace your filter media if general wear and tear has turned into an issue that is now causing inefficient filtration. These systems are the foundation for keeping your aquatic ecosystem happy and healthy so it is important to keep an eye on them and fix any issues as soon as they arise.
The next thing that you’ll want to do is remove any debris left behind from aquatic plants that may be breaking down because of colder temperatures. This is most likely a normal part of their yearly cycle but if left unattended in your water, they will increase nutrient levels which in turn can spawn issues with algae and other nasties.
While it is true that you will most likely have less problems with algae and aquatic weed this season, that does not necessarily mean that they won’t come back with a vengeance come Spring. Organic waste and unwanted excess nutrients will still be building up in your water so issues such as sludge and other nasties still have everything they need to stage an invasion on your aquatic ecosystem, they may just do it a bit more slowly than at other times of the year.
The upside to this, is that if you can catch them while they’re “sleeping” you’ll find yourself in a much better position in the coming seasons where you may normally be at war.
Now is also a great time to implement a biological treatment program if you don’t already have one or check and revise if necessary if you do. We recommend adding some Biostim Pellets, Liquid or Powder coupled with our most highly recommended Nitrifying Bacteria to ensure good health and high water quality. Your Biostim product of choice will help condition your water and break down any sludge that may be at the bottom of your pond and the nitrifying bacteria carry a whole host of benefits, not least being their ability to eat up all the nutrients that allow nasties to breed in your backyard.
This may seem like a lot of work to put in for the season where you’re going to spend the least time by your pond, but trust us when we say this is far preferable to trying to clean up the mess that can be left behind from ignoring your water during the colder months.
Your fish will thank you for protecting their home and you’ll thank yourself when your neighbours who did nothing are spending their lovely Spring weekends trying to rescue their ponds and you’re able to relax by yours with a cup of tea and a happy, healthy ecosystem.
