We have ponds because we enjoy them, not because we want to spend all day every day working at them and worrying about whether all is as it should be. If you fall into the second category, are looking at installing a new pond, or even just want a simpler way of doing things, read on to discover our top five tips for keeping your pond happy the easy way:

  1. Don’t wait until it’s too late.

If you want your pond maintenance to be easy, don’t wait until it’s already suffering to put your plan in place. All you’re doing by delaying things is costing yourself time and money and, in the worst case, causing possibly irreversible damage. You should begin looking after your pond from the moment it is installed if you want to see the best results.

  2. Have the right equipment.

It doesn’t matter how hard you work trying to keep your pond nice, if you don’t have the right tools, you’ll be fighting a losing battle every time. At the very least, you will need a good filtration system and quality pump but if you really want your aquatic ecosystem to flourish, you’re going to need to do your research and find out what additional products are best for your situation.

  3. Check in regularly.

As seasons and conditions change, so will your pond. Anything that includes natural elements is going to vary with the climate so keep an eye on how things change over time and implement strategies to avoid degradation.

  4. Keep your flora and fauna happy.

Your fish and aquatic plants don’t just make your pond look pretty, they also actively contribute to its condition and, by extension, your overall environment. Make sure that every element of your ecosystem has what it needs to stay happy and healthy and your pond should essentially look after itself.

  5. Catch it early.

This one links back to starting your maintenance as soon as your pond goes in but it is important to remember that in order to keep things nice, you’ll need to monitor, and promptly respond to, any issues that may arise. Even the best maintained pond can have problems from time to time so if anything other than your little swimming friends starts to look a bit fishy, get on top of it right away.

While these tips may seem like hard work at first, we can assure you that it’s far easier to do things this way than it is to try to revive a sad, tired pond. Put the initial effort in and you will be rewarded with a happy, healthy, pond all year round.
