Have you ever seen a pond, lake or dam that looks impossibly blue? Or a reflection pool that’s so black it provides a perfect representation of the world around it?

Chances are the owner is using pond dye to achieve that effect.

In this article, we’ll look at the uses for pond dye and answer some FAQs.

What Is Pond Dye?

WaterTreats pond dye is a naturally derived water treatment effective for the colouring of ponds, dam, lakes and other water bodies.

Although generally used for aesthetic reasons, pond dye can also offer other benefits for your aquatic ecosystem.

How Do I Apply It?

WaterTreats pond dye is packaged in a water soluble sachet.

Thanks to this, application is as simple as throwing the correct amount of sachets into your water body and waiting for the dye to disperse throughout your water body.

What Is The Dose Rate?

WaterTreats Pond Dye is supplied in 100g sachets. Each sachet treats 1 megalitre of water volume.

Precise dosing for small water bodies can be achieved by measuring out the appropriate amount of dye.

Application of a full sachet to a pond or dam that holds less than 1 megalitre will simply result in a more intense colour.

What Can I Use Pond Dye For?

Beautification

As noted above, pond dye is most commonly used for the beautification of your pond or dam.

Many of our customers dye their water so that it matches a certain visual theme or aesthetic they are looking to achieve.

If you are not aiming for a specific overall vibe, adding dye to your pond or dam is still a great way to switch things up and add some extra visual appeal.

Algae And Aquatic Weed Control

Although pond dye cannot directly treat or remove algal blooms or aquatic weed outbreaks, it can help reduce the chances of them appearing in the first place.

This is because the addition of dye darkens your water and prevents UV rays from penetrating deep into your water. This disrupts the ability of algae and aquatic weed to complete the process of photosynthesis which makes it harder for them to grow.

Although this will not work for all kinds of algae or weed, it’s certainly a step in the right direction.

Fish Protection

Another benefit of using pond dye that isn’t automatically obvious is that it can offer vital protection for your fishy friends.

Land and air based predators love crystal clear water, it gives them a perfect view of their dinner.

By adding pond dye, you make it almost impossible for predators to accurately track the movements of your fish, therefore allowing them to have longer, happier lives.

How Do I Know Which Colour I Should Use?

Love My Pond stocks three colours of pond dye: blue, black and blue/black.

As a general rule, the blue dye is best for lagoons and dams where you are looking for a uniform colour and a basic, but beautiful appearance.

The black dye is best for reflection ponds and other water bodies that you would like to mirror their surroundings.

The blue/black dye provides a happy medium and is our most popular colour. The application of this dye will achieve a deep blue colour that is slightly reflective but will not act as effectively in a mirroring capacity as the black pond dye does.

Will Pond Dye Hurt My Fish/Plants?

Although we cannot speak for all brands of pond dye, all dye purchased through Love My Pond is 100% fish friendly and aquatic life safe.

The dye we stock is from the WaterTreats water treatment range and has been specifically designed to work alongside nature rather than against it.

As an added bonus, the sachets that our pond dye is packaged in are completely biodegradable.

What About Livestock Or Wildlife That Visit My Dam?

Our pond dye is safe for all forms of life.

Animals that bathe in, or drink, your dam water will not be adversely affected by the presence of dye.

Having said that, we do recommend that you limit the access that livestock and other terrestrial animals have to your dam (dyed or not) as their hooves and movement along the banks can be detrimental to the integrity of your dam in some cases.

If you would like to use your dam for stock watering, we recommend pumping water from your dam to a trough or similar water holding solution.

Can I Use Dyed Water For Irrigation?

Water that has been dyed with WaterTreats pond dye can be safely used for irrigation of crops and gardens.

Although the chance of the dye affecting crop colouring is minimal, we suggest waiting 24-48 hours after application prior to resuming pumping.

This allows time for the dye to fully disperse throughout the water body and reduces the chances of undiluted dye being pumped through your irrigation system.
